Dallas, Texas is a metroplex that is booming with summer activities at every corner. It isn’t too challenging to find something exciting to do whether it is a place to eat, an event taking place or some kind of summer activity, Dallas has it all. So, whether you are a local who is familiar with the area or a tourist coming down for a visit, here is a quick guide to spending a summer in Dallas.
Food
For those who enjoy going out to eat and discovering new spots, you will be happy to note that there is an abundance of options in Dallas. One popular food choice is elotes which are fresh corn smothered in cotija cheese, butter, cream, lemon pepper, and chili powder. One of the best spots for this dish is at Elotes at Fuel City. Corn dogs are another popular summer delicacy and what better way to enjoy them than at an OG Texas State Fair at Fletcher’s Corn Dogs—who, by the way, invented the dish. For those who love some good BBQ, look no further than the BBQ Trough at Pecan Lodge. It offers a sample of some of their best dishes from brisket to sausage to their perfectly-smoked chicken breast. The Pecan Lodge is also a very popular destination, so you’re better off getting their early before they sell out for the day.
Finally, for dessert, you have a couple of options. First, there is Carnival Barkers where they bring back the traditional way of making ice cream from scratch. Be sure to try out their Rice Crispy Treat Ice Cream Sandwich. Another great option is the Champagne White Tea Popsicle at Steel City Pops which is so good, you might even crave it during the winter months.
Activities
Dallas, Texas is also home to a bevy of different options for fun activities from museums to outdoor adventures and more. Dallas is the home of the largest urban hardwood forest in America. A great way to experience this is by taking up a hike at Trinity Audubon Center. They offer guided hikes with a variety of nature-related themes available weekly, but you also have the option to take your own path. This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Sixth Floor Museum where I currently serve as a board member. It chronicles the life and legacy of former President John F. Kennedy. The museum contains over 50,000 items related to Kennedy. Its location even holds great significance as it is the very building where Lee Harvey Oswald shot Kennedy from back in 1963.
Klyde Warren Park is a great place to spend the afternoon on a nice day. They always have food trucks lined up with different activities on their schedule such as yoga classes, salsa dancing, and things for the children as well. If you are looking to get extremely adventurous, check out iFly Indoor Skydiving where you can get the same kind of adrenaline and thrill that comes with skydiving without actually jumping out of a plane.
